Just over half—51 per cent—of American stations were consistently launching balloons at the prescribed times earlier this summer, a stark decline from 2025. In contrast, Canada has maintained a robust network, with 92 per cent of its stations still operating on the expected schedule.

It’s a void,” he lamented. Many soundings in the western U.S. have been postponed by several hours, creating significant data gaps that Canadian forecasters depend on for their models.
The repercussions of these changes are particularly pronounced in regions prone to extreme weather, such as Southern Ontario and Quebec. Without timely and accurate data, forecasters are left operating with diminished confidence, which could lead to inadequate warnings for severe weather events.

The U.S. National Weather Service has justified the changes in balloon launch schedules, citing temporary resource constraints. John Bateman, a spokesperson for the agency, noted that most stations continue to operate normally. However, meteorologists like Matthew Bunkers, a retired meteorologist from the National Weather Service, highlight a divide: some forecasters welcome the new schedule, which aligns better with late-afternoon storm developments.
Nonetheless, this shift raises alarms for Canadian meteorologists, who find themselves increasingly reliant on U.S. data. Patrick McCarthy, a former Environment and Climate Change Canada expert, asserted that Canada must invest in its own weather balloon network to reduce this dependency. He pointed out that major urban centres in the Prairies lack reliable balloon soundings, which compromises the accuracy of forecasts in those areas.

While the government has deployed a mobile upper air station in Saskatoon to temporarily launch balloons during weekdays, experts like McCarthy are concerned about the long-term viability of this solution.
Environment and Climate Change Canada’s spokesperson, Samantha Bayard, acknowledged the challenges posed by reduced U.S. soundings but emphasized the resilience of Canada’s monitoring systems.
Despite the immediate forecasts remaining relatively unaffected, the real test lies in extreme weather scenarios. Eric Floehr, founder of ForecastWatch, remarked that while daily forecasts have maintained their accuracy, it is during unusual weather events that the absence of balloon data could prove costly.
