The survey revealed that 76 per cent of participating pharmacies anticipate welcoming a significant number of new patients seeking the medication in the coming months.

Almost half of the pharmacies surveyed reported an increase in inquiries from potential patients eager to begin treatment since the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granted approval in June. Olivier Picard, chairman of the NPA, remarked on the implications of this launch: “This is a significant day, and pharmacies are bracing themselves for a surge in demand for this new form of weight loss treatment. This is particularly significant for patients who cannot or do not want to take an injectable medicine.” He emphasised the role that community pharmacies can play in enhancing access to these treatments, particularly as the NHS rollout has been relatively sluggish.
Concerns About Counterfeit Medications
Despite the optimism surrounding the Wegovy tablet, concerns about the potential rise of counterfeit medications have emerged. A staggering 97 per cent of pharmacies surveyed expressed apprehension that the tablet form may lead to an increase in illicit sales of fake weight loss pills. The NPA has therefore urged patients to obtain Wegovy solely through regulated pharmacies and after undergoing a comprehensive consultation.
Picard noted the dangers posed by the burgeoning black market for weight loss medications: “This survey shows pharmacies are concerned about a dangerous and growing black market for weight loss medicines, with tablet-form medication likely to be easier for criminals to counterfeit.” He advised patients to remain vigilant and consult with local pharmacists if they have reservations about medications purchased online.
