As the long weekend approaches, many travellers are left anxious and uncertain as WestJet Airlines initiates its first wave of flight cancellations in response to a looming strike by flight attendants. Early Saturday, the airline announced the cancellation of 81 flights, a number that escalated to 276 by the end of the day. The airline stated that these measures were taken to prevent potential disruptions for both crew members and passengers, urging travellers to verify their flight status before heading to the airport.
Flight Cancellations Amid Ongoing Negotiations
The majority of the cancellations were concentrated on Saturday, with additional disruptions expected on Sunday and Monday. The most affected route was Toronto to Vancouver, which saw four flights grounded. Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu, currently in Calgary for negotiations between WestJet and the union, emphasised the importance of reaching an agreement through mediation. “With federal mediators supporting negotiations since May, the parties can and should reach a deal. Canadians are counting on it,” Hajdu stated.
Despite the turmoil, the check-in area at Toronto Pearson International Airport was busy with travellers, many of whom were keen to reach their holiday destinations. Alyesha Singh was among those hoping to make it to a family reunion in the Dominican Republic, expressing her excitement about reuniting with relatives she hadn’t seen in years. “We just hope everything comes to a conclusion before we get back,” she said, keeping a close watch on cancellation updates.
Union and Airline at an Impasse
The union representing WestJet’s flight attendants, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), has issued a 72-hour strike notice, which will expire just after midnight on Sunday. In response, WestJet has filed its own lockout notice, heightening tensions between the two parties. Negotiations have revolved around issues of pay, particularly compensation for ground work, which has become a significant sticking point.
WestJet’s proposal includes what it describes as “meaningful wage increases throughout the life of the agreement” as well as improvements in scheduling and quality of life. However, CUPE rejected this offer, stating that the airline’s claims of progress do not adequately address the comprehensive needs of its members. Alia Hussain, president of CUPE 8125, pointed out that the airline’s message was merely a fraction of a larger contract still under negotiation. “We are seeking a comprehensive contract that reflects the priorities of our members,” she asserted.

With the deadline for a potential strike looming, the atmosphere remains tense. If an agreement is not reached by Sunday morning, either party could initiate a work stoppage that may cancel hundreds of flights during a crucial long weekend. Carlo de Leon, who was also travelling to the Dominican Republic, expressed his nervousness but remained hopeful. “I’m pretty optimistic,” he said, referring to the chance of flying without further cancellations.
