In a surreal turn of events on July 2, residents and visitors of Boston Bar, British Columbia, found themselves on the frontline of a burgeoning wildfire crisis. As flames erupted alongside the road, Fernando Balanta and others attempted to extinguish the blaze using whatever means they had, from stomping on the flames to wielding frying pans. This fire, later identified as the Brunswick Creek wildfire, has since merged with the Ainslie Creek blaze, resulting in a catastrophic fire complex that has led to extensive evacuation orders across the Fraser Canyon region.
A Community Under Siege
The initial outbreak of the Brunswick Creek fire quickly escalated into a significant threat, engulfing an estimated 180 square kilometres of land. It became apparent that the blaze, driven by fierce winds, was beyond the control of those attempting to manage it on the ground. Balanta, a visitor who had been staying in Boston Bar, recounted the growing intensity of the situation, stating, “It just started kind of getting a little scary. I realised this thing was potentially going to be very serious.” The urgency of the situation compelled local residents to document the unfolding events, with Balanta recording a video that captured the chaotic attempts to suppress the flames.
The rapid spread of the fire forced emergency services into action, leading to widespread evacuations. The Ainslie Creek wildfire, which soon followed, devastated the Blue Lake Resort, destroying multiple structures, including the home of Saeed Mansouri and his wife. As Mansouri prepared to celebrate their first anniversary, the couple faced the stark reality of losing everything, including precious keepsakes and memories that had accumulated over the years. “Those were the only copies. I kept them all,” he lamented, referring to his decades of poetry and personal letters from his late father.
Firefighting Efforts Intensify
The British Columbia Wildfire Service has mobilised an extensive response to the crisis, deploying 270 firefighters, 17 helicopters, and 37 pieces of heavy machinery to combat the flames. Operations are ongoing around the clock, with crews also utilising helicopters equipped for night operations. However, the challenging mountainous terrain presents significant obstacles. Fire information officer Julia Caranci acknowledged the dangers, stating, “There are some areas we simply cannot put crews because it is not safe for them to be working there.”

Local business owner Jagdip Singh Bihal has adapted his restaurant hours to cater to the firefighting crews, providing much-needed sustenance amidst the chaos. He noted the unprecedented nature of the fires during his four years running JB’s Drive-In Restaurant, and the strain it has placed on the town. With supply deliveries interrupted by the fires, Bihal took it upon himself to source provisions, demonstrating the resilience and solidarity of the community.
Residents like Kelly Anderson expressed their gratitude for the firefighters’ relentless efforts, stating, “As long as they’re in between us and the fire, I’m feeling a lot more comfortable about it.” Yet, the anxiety and uncertainty that have gripped the town are palpable.
An online fundraiser has been launched to support Mansouri and his wife as they begin to rebuild their lives after the fire. “It’s a big loss, but it is what it is,” he reflected. “All we have to do at this point is just get going and just think of the future.”
