In a harrowing turn of events, residents of Boston Bar, British Columbia, are grappling with the devastating impacts of the Brunswick Creek wildfire, which ignited on July 2. This inferno has since merged with the Ainslie Creek fire, resulting in a complex blaze that has forced widespread evacuations and obliterated homes, leaving the community of approximately 160 residents in turmoil.
A Surreal Encounter with Flames
Fernando Balanta’s day began like any other as he made his way to the local landfill. However, the ordinary quickly escalated into chaos when he and others stumbled upon flames raging along both sides of the road. Despite their desperate attempts to douse the fire—using everything from their feet to a frying pan—the flames continued to spread, driven by fierce winds.
“We all reported it,” Balanta recounted, describing the surreal moment when the fire’s potential for destruction became apparent. The BC Wildfire Service later confirmed that this location was indeed the fire’s origin point. As the blaze intensified, Balanta realised the severity of the situation, acknowledging that if more people had been present, they might have been able to extinguish the flames on one side of the road. Unfortunately, the other side was engulfed completely.
The Destruction Unfolds
As the Brunswick Creek fire escalated, it wreaked havoc on the surrounding environment, consuming approximately 180 square kilometres of land. Tragically, the Ainslie Creek wildfire also claimed significant structures, including the Blue Lake Resort, where Saeed Mansouri and his wife were set to celebrate their first wedding anniversary. Video footage captured the heartbreaking aftermath as their home was reduced to mere ashes.
Mansouri, who had previously faced homelessness while living in his SUV during the pandemic, described Blue Lake as a sanctuary that had offered him stability and a sense of belonging. Now, he has lost everything, including irreplaceable poetry written in his native Farsi and precious memories of his late father. “Those were the only copies,” he lamented. “All I have left are memories.” Despite the overwhelming loss, Mansouri expressed gratitude for the efforts of firefighters, though he recognised the scale of the challenge they faced.

The BC Wildfire Service has mobilised a formidable response, deploying 270 firefighters, 17 helicopters, and 37 pieces of heavy equipment. Operations are ongoing around the clock, even utilising helicopters equipped with night vision to combat the blaze effectively. Julia Caranci, a fire information officer, explained the complexities of the firefighting operation: “There are some areas we simply cannot put crews because it is not safe for them to be working there.” The unpredictable nature of the fire, exacerbated by steep slopes and gusty winds, has made containment efforts increasingly difficult.

With highway access severely limited due to the fires, Bihal has taken it upon himself to ensure his restaurant remains stocked, even driving to Surrey to secure supplies.
As the situation unfolds, a fundraising effort has been initiated to assist Mansouri and his wife in rebuilding their lives. “It’s a big loss, but it is what it is,” Mansouri reflected, focusing on the future despite the devastation surrounding him.
