Metro Vancouver is facing a significant penalty of nearly £170,000 from WorkSafeBC due to serious safety violations that occurred during a valve replacement project. During the valve replacement operation, workers were using pry bars to assist a crane in lifting a gearbox when it unexpectedly released, propelling upwards and posing a severe risk to personnel on site. WorkSafeBC’s investigation found multiple high-risk violations, including inadequate hazard planning prior to commencing the work. The regulatory body also noted that insufficient training and lack of proper oversight contributed to the dangerous situation.
“This poor worker was crushed by a large piece of machinery coming loose and landing on or flying at him, and only through good luck that he survived, to be honest. It’s a terrible accident,” stated Bill Tielman from the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees Union. Kiel Giddens, the BC Conservative Labour critic, commented on the necessity of proper training and supervisory oversight, especially when working in confined spaces. “When we’re talking about confined spaces, you need proper training and standard operating procedures and you absolutely need supervisory oversight, and that’s what was missing here,” he asserted.
