Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a grave warning about an imminent large-scale attack from Russian forces, coinciding with recent airstrikes that have claimed the lives of at least six people across the country. In his nightly address, Zelensky urged citizens to remain vigilant and heed air raid warnings as tensions escalate in the ongoing conflict.
Escalation of Attacks
On Saturday, the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia was struck by glide bombs, resulting in five fatalities and ten injuries, according to Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov. In a separate incident near the Russian border, a bombing near Sumy left one person dead, local officials confirmed. Additionally, in the Kherson region, a drone attack on a village north of the city of Kherson led to another death, as reported by Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.
Zelensky’s nightly video address reflected the urgency of the situation: “Tonight and in the coming hours, it is especially important to pay close attention to air raid warnings. The Russians have prepared for a massive attack. Please take care of yourselves.” This warning follows previous comments from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who indicated that the Kremlin was planning “massive coordinated strikes” in retaliation for Ukraine’s drone attacks targeting Moscow.
Ukraine’s Offensive Strategies
The situation is further complicated by Ukraine’s recent drone assaults, which have intensified in frequency and scale. On Friday night, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil refinery in Moscow, marking one of the largest aerial offensives against Russia in the duration of the war. Ukrainian officials claimed that these tactics are intended to disrupt Russian military operations and infrastructure.
In Crimea, Ukrainian drone strikes reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and left 28 others injured, according to Russian authorities. This offensive has prompted a temporary suspension of ferry services across the Kerch Strait, which connects Crimea to the Krasnodar region, following a drone attack that ignited a fire at an oil terminal.
Diplomatic Tensions with Belarus
Amidst these military developments, Zelensky has also called on Belarus to dismantle several relay stations suspected of aiding Russian drone operations targeting Ukraine. Belarus, a close ally of Moscow under President Alexander Lukashenko, has been accused of facilitating Russia’s military actions since the onset of the conflict in February 2022.
While Lukashenko has professed his desire to remain uninvolved in the war, Zelensky has urged Belarusian authorities to demonstrate their neutrality. He stated, “Belarus still has time to dismantle this equipment. We also know about every factory in Belarus that works for Russia and supports the war,” highlighting Ukraine’s awareness of Belarus’s role in the ongoing hostilities.
Renewed Concerns over Nuclear Safety
The conflict has also raised alarms regarding nuclear safety, particularly at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest. Recently, the facility lost external power for the twentieth time due to military activity, forcing it to rely on diesel generators. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that power had been restored but noted that ongoing military actions continue to jeopardise the plant’s safety. This incident underscores the risks associated with military engagements near critical infrastructure.
