Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham at a naval base on Monday, marking his first official visit to the UK under Burnham’s leadership. This significant encounter underscores the UK’s steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, just days after Burnham took office.
A Show of Solidarity
Zelenskyy’s visit comes less than two weeks after former Prime Minister Keir Starmer made his final foreign trip to Kyiv. Burnham, who has pledged to continue Starmer’s robust support for Ukraine, spoke with Zelenskyy shortly after taking up residence in Number 10. The meeting aims to highlight the enduring partnership between the two nations as they confront the challenges posed by Russia’s invasion.
During this visit, the Ukrainian leader and the British Prime Minister will engage with military personnel from both nations involved in Exercise Sea Breeze, a multinational training operation focused on maritime security in the Black Sea. This year’s second phase took place in Portland, Dorset, and concluded recently, involving over 200 Ukrainian troops.
Crucial Discussions Ahead
The agenda for the day includes discussions about collaborative projects, particularly the Stone Cloak initiative. This innovative electronic jamming system, developed in the UK, has been shared with Ukraine, allowing its immediate deployment against Russian air defence systems. Thousands of these jammers, compact devices akin to tablet computers, have already been dispatched to Ukraine for use with drones, significantly enhancing their operational capabilities.
“It’s vital that we stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine,” Burnham stated in a pre-visit release from Downing Street. “Our resolve remains unwavering, and we will not rest until we secure a lasting peace for Ukraine.”
Substantial Support from the UK
The UK’s commitment to Ukraine has been substantial, with Downing Street reporting a total of £25 billion in support since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. This includes £16 billion dedicated to military assistance. Burnham’s predecessor, Starmer, had made numerous trips to Ukraine, solidifying a strong diplomatic relationship. Notably, after a tense meeting with former US President Donald Trump in 2025, Zelenskyy received a warm welcome in the UK, meeting with both Starmer and King Charles at Sandringham.
During Starmer’s last visit to Ukraine, Zelenskyy awarded him the prestigious Order of Freedom, signifying deep gratitude for the UK’s unwavering support.
