Calgary’s technology landscape is witnessing a remarkable transformation, driven by a surge in job creation and innovation. A recent analysis by CBRE Group reveals that the city’s tech industry has expanded by an astounding 56%, resulting in the addition of 28,900 new jobs. This growth positions Calgary as a leader in North America for the percentage increase in new tech roles. Jen Lussier, CEO of Platform Calgary, attributes this success to the integration of technology across various traditional sectors, including energy, clean tech, agriculture, and manufacturing.

A Hub for Innovation

Nestled in the heart of downtown Calgary, Platform Calgary serves as a vital nexus for tech entrepreneurs and innovators. The organisation not only fosters collaboration among startups but also offers tailored support programmes designed to help founders navigate the complexities of building a business. “We like to say it takes a village to raise a startup,” Lussier remarked. “Platform works to connect and grow the broader tech community, while also providing direct programming that equips founders with the skills needed to develop their products, engage with customers, secure funding, and build effective teams.”

The success of Platform Calgary is the culmination of a well-structured innovation strategy laid out by Calgary Economic Development. Over the next three years, Platform will act as a critical referral engine, linking various sectors such as aerospace, energy, sports, and logistics to the tech ecosystem. Lussier emphasised the importance of this strategy, stating, “It’s a solid foundational policy that recognises how tech integrates into each sector.”

Diverse Opportunities Beyond Coding

While the tech industry is often associated with programmers and software developers, the demand for talent extends far beyond these roles. Companies are actively seeking professionals in sales, human resources, logistics, and more. Nathan Day, head of sales and marketing at TCG Machines, shared insights into his company’s remarkable growth. “For the past six consecutive years, we have doubled in size,” he noted, explaining how the firm evolved from a one-person operation to a team of 40. TCG Machines has carved out a niche in the trading card sector, recently relocating to a spacious facility that allows them to process an impressive billion cards.

The company’s success is not merely a stroke of luck; it stems from years of dedicated effort. Day reflected on the nature of their work: “The more enjoyable a job is, the harder you have to work at it. People are drawn to intrinsic value rather than just financial reward.” He underscored the company’s mission to provide significant value to trading card businesses, which is central to their ethos.

Education and Talent Acquisition Challenges

Despite the remarkable job growth, Calgary faces challenges in terms of educational output. The CBRE report highlights a shortfall in tech-related graduates, with only 3,660 students emerging from local post-secondary institutions to fill the nearly 29,000 new positions. However, Day expressed confidence in the city’s ability to attract talent. “Calgary has done an excellent job of leveraging its existing pool of forward-thinking and ambitious individuals,” he said. “Support from local, provincial, and federal levels has reinforced our belief in our capabilities and facilitated our growth.”

As Calgary continues to evolve as a tech hub, the interplay between job creation and educational resources will be crucial in sustaining this momentum.

Why it Matters

Calgary’s tech industry is not just a local success story; it reflects broader trends in the global economy where technology integrates with traditional sectors, driving innovation and job creation. The city’s ability to attract talent and support startups is essential for its long-term economic resilience. As the tech landscape expands, stakeholders must address educational gaps to ensure a skilled workforce is available to meet the demands of this booming sector. This dynamic growth has the potential to position Calgary as a key player in the global technology arena, influencing how industries across North America adapt to an increasingly digital future.
