Survivors of abuse linked to former Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed are demanding a comprehensive investigation into human trafficking, asserting that without such scrutiny, the “true scale” of his alleged misconduct will remain concealed. This plea comes as over 400 allegations of sexual misconduct spanning from 1977 to 2014 have surfaced, prompting significant concern and action from advocacy groups.
Survivors Unite for Justice
The collective known as No One Above (NOA), formed by individuals who have experienced abuse at the hands of Al Fayed, is urging the Metropolitan Police to expand their current investigation. They contend that a primary focus on trafficking is essential to uncover the broader network of individuals who might have facilitated or enabled Al Fayed’s actions.
Al Fayed, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 94, faced no charges during his lifetime despite numerous allegations that include rape, sexual assault, human trafficking, and physical violence. Lawyers representing the Justice for Fayed and Harrods Survivors group revealed that 421 individuals have reported incidents of abuse occurring not only at Harrods but also at the Ritz hotel in Paris, Fulham FC, and other properties owned by the late businessman.
Metropolitan Police Investigation Under Scrutiny
Currently, the Metropolitan Police are investigating claims from 155 victims who have reached out to them directly, with 21 of these individuals coming forward before Al Fayed’s death. However, the NOA insists that a dedicated trafficking investigation is critical for revealing the full extent of the alleged abuse. They are calling for the National Crime Agency to establish a joint investigation team (JIT) to work alongside the Met, allowing for collaboration with international law enforcement partners.
Concerns have also been raised by several Members of Parliament regarding the police’s handling of past and ongoing allegations against Al Fayed. The all-party parliamentary group for survivors stated, “Survivors of Mohamed Fayed have waited years, and in many cases decades, for the police to investigate allegations against him. Understandably, many fear that his enablers will never be brought to justice.”
Testimonies Highlight Systemic Abuse
One survivor, who spoke under the pseudonym Justine, recounted her experiences working at Harrods in the 1990s. She claimed she was trafficked and abused by Al Fayed, describing a systematic approach he employed to target vulnerable women. “His modus operandi involved walking the floor, flanked by security, to identify women he found attractive. Subsequently, a team member would invite them to his office, where the abuse would begin,” she explained.
Justine further detailed how victims were coerced into silence through intimidation, with security personnel allegedly threatening harm or reputational ruin to ensure compliance. She stressed the need to view Al Fayed’s crimes as part of a larger trafficking operation involving numerous accomplices, from security staff to bank personnel who facilitated the financial aspects of the abuse.
Ongoing Investigations and Accountability
The Metropolitan Police have indicated that they have interviewed four suspects under caution since the investigation began 18 months ago. Justine expressed frustration over her own attempts to report her experiences, stating that after speaking with police in 2018, she received “absolutely no follow-up or action taken.”
An investigation is currently being conducted by the Independent Office for Police Conduct into how allegations against Al Fayed were managed, scrutinising one serving officer and four former officers involved.
A spokesperson for the Met assured the public that “specialist detectives” are leading one of the largest and most complex investigations in the department’s history. They have committed to prioritising communication with victims as the inquiry progresses.
