Canada’s national football team is gearing up for the FIFA World Cup with the announcement of a 26-man squad, featuring prominent names like Alphonso Davies. Head coach Jesse Marsch unveiled the list on Friday after a training camp held in Charlotte, North Carolina. As excitement builds, the Toronto skyline was adorned with banners celebrating the selected players, showcasing the nation’s diverse talent.

Davis’ Injury Status

Davies, who plays for Bayern Munich, has been recovering from a hamstring injury and was unable to participate in the recent training camp. However, he is expected to join his teammates in Edmonton for a friendly match against Uzbekistan on Monday. Marsch indicated that while Davies is working hard to return to form, he may not be fit for Canada’s opening game of the tournament.

“The players we have reflect the rich tapestry of communities and cultures in Canada,” Marsch stated in the announcement. “They are determined, fearless, and take immense pride in representing our country.”

Experienced Players and Fresh Faces

The squad includes 13 players who participated in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, among them Juventus striker Jonathan David and Hull City midfielder Liam Millar. Notably, the roster also welcomes 13 newcomers, such as goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau from Orlando City, defender Moïse Bombito from OGC Nice, and forward Tani Oluwaseyi from Villarreal.

In addition to Crépeau, the goalkeeping duties will be supported by Owen Goodman (Crystal Palace) and Dayne St. Clair (Inter Miami). The defensive line will feature a mix of experienced and budding talent, including Derek Cornelius (Olympique de Marseille), Alistair Johnston (Celtic), and Richie Laryea (Toronto FC), among others.

Midfield and Forward Line-Up

Marsch has named ten midfielders to the squad, including Ali Ahmed (Norwich City), Tajon Buchanan (Villarreal), and Stephen Eustáquio (FC Porto). The forward line is equally dynamic, with David leading the charge alongside Cyle Larin (RCD Mallorca) and Promise David (Royale Union Saint-Gilloise).

After taking on Uzbekistan, the Canadian squad will head to Montreal for a friendly against Ireland on June 5, allowing the team to refine their strategies ahead of the World Cup.

Upcoming Matches and World Cup Schedule

Canada’s World Cup journey begins on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Following that, the team will travel to Vancouver for group-stage matches against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. Notably absent from the World Cup roster are Zorhan Bassong (Sporting Kansas City), Jayden Nelson (Austin FC), and Ralph Priso (Vancouver Whitecaps), who were part of the Charlotte camp but won’t travel to the tournament.
