These revelations have significant implications for understanding female sexual response, including arousal and orgasm. O’Connell, who completed the first comprehensive anatomical study of the clitoris in 1998, emphasised the importance of this knowledge for enhancing women’s health and wellbeing. “Orgasm is a brain function that leads to improved health and wellbeing,” she asserted, highlighting its positive effects on human relationships and potential fertility.

FGM often entails the removal of the clitoris and labial structures, leading to severe health complications and diminished sexual function.

Lee noted that approximately 22% of women who undergo reconstructive surgery following FGM report a decline in orgasmic experience. A more nuanced understanding of nerve pathways could significantly reduce this statistic, enhancing the quality of life for countless women. Additionally, the findings could inform surgeries related to vulvar cancer, gender reassignment, and cosmetic procedures such as labiaplasty, which has seen a 70% increase in popularity between 2015 and 2020.
