In a bold display of national pride, Grouse Mountain Resort has unfurled what it claims to be the largest Canadian flag ever created. Measuring an impressive 160 metres in length and 80 metres in height—equivalent to the size of two football fields—the flag has been set up on The Cut, a prominent ski run that overlooks Burrard Inlet in Vancouver. This initiative is part of the resort’s efforts to rally support for the Canadian team during the upcoming World Cup matches.
A Grand Display of Patriotism
The massive flag, crafted by Blast Media Print from special weather-resistant fabric, was installed with the help of over 100 individuals. Weighing in at more than 1,500 kilograms, the installation process was a significant undertaking, yet Grouse Mountain officials maintain that no trees were harmed during its placement. Adam Rootman, senior director of marketing at the resort, expressed his pride in the project, stating, “From our perspective, we’re just looking to do something really patriotic and an activation that was respectful to the flag and to our country.”
While the visual impact of the flag is undeniable, it has raised some questions regarding proper flag etiquette. According to guidelines set out by the federal government, national flags should never touch the ground and should be displayed with the Maple Leaf pointing to the left when positioned vertically. However, Rootman believes that the intention behind the installation is what truly matters.
A Record-Breaking Ambition
Grouse Mountain is actively seeking certification from Guinness World Records for the title of the largest flag ever displayed on a mountain. Although the current record for the largest draped national flag is held by Qatar, measuring approximately 510 metres by 200 metres, the Grouse Mountain flag aims to carve its own niche in the record books.
Rootman highlighted the significance of the flag’s unveiling in the context of the World Cup, which will kick off with Australia facing Turkey at BC Place in Vancouver on June 13. Canada is scheduled to play against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24. The presence of such a monumental symbol is expected to enhance the atmosphere and draw more visitors to the region during this sporting event.
