As wildfires wreak havoc in northern Minnesota, the state has invoked emergency measures, deploying the National Guard to assist in firefighting efforts. Governor Tim Walz has described the situation as volatile and perilous, exacerbated by dry and windy conditions that continue to fuel the flames.
Wildfires Prompt Statewide Emergency Declaration
In response to escalating wildfire threats, Governor Walz issued an executive order declaring a peacetime emergency. This decisive move enables the full mobilisation of state resources to safeguard communities at risk. “Unpredictable and fast-moving wildfires are putting Minnesota communities at risk,” Walz stated, emphasising the urgency of the situation. “This emergency declaration ensures we can fully mobilise the resources needed to protect lives, support evacuations, and help communities respond and recover.”
The National Guard’s activation is crucial, as personnel will provide additional staffing, equipment, and other essential support to bolster firefighting operations and overall emergency response efforts.
Current Wildfire Situation
Among the most concerning incidents are the Stewart Trail fire near Two Harbors, which has expanded to approximately 355 acres (145 hectares), and the Flanders fire in Crow Wing County, currently estimated at around 1,200 acres. On Saturday, firefighters faced immense challenges as gusty winds and parched conditions sparked further outbreaks across the northern region.
By Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Incident Command System (MNICS) reported a 30% containment of the Stewart Trail fire, although mandatory evacuations remained in place for residents and businesses in the affected areas. State Highway 61 was also closed between Two Harbors and Silver Bay, further complicating access for emergency services.
Lake County Sheriff Nathan Stadler provided a grim update, revealing that preliminary assessments indicated the destruction of 34 structures, including eight primary residences. “We know that this situation is stressful for residents, visitors, everybody involved,” Stadler said at a press conference. “Our teams are working around the clock to keep people safe. They’re doing their best to get this fire under control so that people can return to their properties.”

As firefighting crews continue their efforts, state officials have warned that shifting wind patterns and increased gusts might hinder containment strategies. The presence of a temporary flight restriction remains in effect, with authorities urging the public to refrain from operating drones in proximity to the fires, as this could interfere with aerial firefighting operations.
