Montreal is poised for a significant enhancement of its public transport system as the excavation for the Blue Line metro extension to Anjou has officially commenced. The ambitious project, which will add approximately five kilometres of new track and five additional stations, marks a milestone in the city’s transit development, with construction efforts set to unfold over the next two years.
A Monumental Engineering Feat
At the heart of this project is a state-of-the-art tunnel-boring machine, a marvel of engineering that measures three storeys in height and weighs around 2,000 tonnes. This machine, which was constructed locally after arriving in February, is designed to efficiently excavate rock while simultaneously installing the tunnel lining. Officials believe its dual capabilities will streamline the construction process, ensuring that the project remains on schedule.
Named in honour of Lisette St-Onge, the first female métro operator in Montreal, the machine’s title was selected through a public vote, symbolising a nod to the city’s commitment to inclusivity in its history. St-Onge expressed her emotions at the unveiling: “I feel great, I feel nervous, I feel happy,” reflecting the significance of this project for both her and the community.
A Long-Awaited Development
The Blue Line extension has been a vision for the east end of Montreal for several decades. Chantal Rouleau, the Member of the National Assembly for Pointe-aux-Trembles, celebrated the groundbreaking on Tuesday, stating, “Today is a great day for the east end of Montreal. We were waiting for that project for many, many years.” This sentiment resonates with many residents who have long anticipated improved transit options in their neighbourhood.
Montreal’s Mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, highlighted the investment’s broader implications, suggesting it paves the way for future developments in the region. “We need to keep this tunnel machine because we have so many other projects we need to do,” she noted, emphasising the long-term vision for urban expansion.

The excavation phase is projected to continue until 2028, with the project remaining on track and within budget. Officials have set their sights on a completion date in 2031. Once operational, the five new stations are expected to integrate tens of thousands of additional passengers into the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) network, significantly enhancing connectivity for residents of the east end.
