Via Rail has unveiled an ambitious proposal aimed at enhancing the travel experience for long-distance train passengers connecting to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport. Announced on Wednesday, the plan involves the establishment of a new integrated transit hub in Dorval, Quebec, which will unify services from Via Rail, exo trains, and airport shuttle services. The initiative seeks to streamline transit options, creating a more cohesive travel experience for both local residents and visitors.
A One-Stop Solution for Commuters
Karl Helou, a spokesperson for Via Rail, emphasised the importance of this project, stating, “The goal really is to group all of the transportation options under the same roof to provide really a one-stop shop for transit for people in Dorval, for people coming in from outside, inside the city.” This new hub aims to address the current fragmented transit system that requires commuters to navigate an underpass and cross several roads to switch between services.
Local commuters have expressed optimism about the proposed changes. Paul Parisien, a West Island resident, remarked, “That would be fantastic. And if we could connect it with the REM [light rail] somehow, then we would have a totally integrated public transportation system.” The prospect of a seamless transfer between Via Rail and other transit options is seen as a significant enhancement to the travel experience.
Support from Local Officials
Dorval Mayor Marc Doret has also voiced his strong support for the initiative, noting the difficulties faced in navigating the area currently. He highlighted that consolidating these transit options into a single location will make it significantly easier for the public. “It’s very difficult to get around the area right now,” he stated. “We’re going to have everything together in one central area, and that’s what’s going to make it easier and user-friendly for the public.”
The integration of transit services is expected not only to simplify the travel process but also to encourage more commuters to opt for public transportation. Helou mentioned, “Integrated mobility is a proven concept. Offer transportation options that are easy to use, simple to use and people will use it.”
Future Developments and Funding
The proposal includes plans to close the existing Via Rail station located on the south side of the CN tracks and construct a new bimodal station on the northern end, adjacent to the existing exo stop. An overpass will be built over the tracks, ensuring that both Via Rail and exo trains can continue to operate without disruption to services. “So no disruptions of service and a much better experience, an accessible experience for passengers,” Helou assured.
While funding has been secured from the Government of Canada, a final budget for the project has yet to be established. Additionally, although timelines for the construction are not yet confirmed, Helou indicated that the full project could take between two and five years to complete.
Why it Matters
This initiative is poised to reshape the transit landscape in Dorval, potentially setting a precedent for integrated transportation solutions across Canada. By creating a central hub that offers seamless connections between various modes of transport, the project not only aims to enhance convenience for passengers but also seeks to promote a shift away from car dependency towards a more sustainable public transportation system. In doing so, it represents a significant step towards modernising travel infrastructure in Quebec, with long-term benefits for both the environment and the commuting public.
