As the UK braces for a weekend of heavy rainfall and potential flooding, the Met Office has issued a stark warning to households in 32 affected areas. The weather agency has urged residents to take immediate action and assemble emergency kits to safeguard themselves and their homes.

The yellow weather warning, currently in place from Saturday, January 24, to Sunday, January 25, covers a wide swath of the country, including parts of Scotland, South Wales, and South-West England. The Met Office has cautioned that the heavy downpours could lead to delays in bus and train services, as well as potential power outages.

“Unsettled weather continues for many across the UK with persistent and heavy rain in parts of Scotland with snow over higher ground, and strong winds and heavy rain in Southwestern England and Southern Wales,” said Andy Page, Met Office Chief Forecaster. “Elsewhere, while it’ll be a breezy weekend, there will be brighter and drier spells with occasional showers passing through fairly quickly.”

Households in the affected regions have been advised to check if their properties are at risk of flooding and to prepare a flood plan and an emergency kit. The essential items recommended include insurance documents, a torch, a wind-up or battery-operated radio, warm clothing and blankets, a first aid kit, any necessary prescription medicines, bottled water, and non-perishable food.

The full list of areas under the Met Office’s warning includes Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Angus, Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry, County Tyrone, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Perth and Kinross, Plymouth, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Somerset, Swansea, Torbay, and Torfaen.

Residents in these regions are urged to take the Met Office’s advice seriously and prepare for the potential disruption and flooding that could occur over the coming days. By taking proactive measures and assembling emergency kits, households can ensure they are better equipped to weather the storm and safeguard their well-being.
