In light of a recent hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship, researchers at a Saskatoon infectious disease laboratory are delving into the immune responses of humans compared to rodents. The World Health Organization is closely monitoring the situation, which has already resulted in three fatalities among passengers who embarked on the vessel in Argentina on April 11.
Understanding Hantavirus
Hantavirus, primarily transmitted by deer mice, poses serious health risks to humans, with symptoms ranging from fatigue and muscle aches to severe respiratory distress. Dr. Bryce Warner, a scientist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) at the University of Saskatchewan, explains that deer mice are often asymptomatic carriers. “When deer mice are infected with the virus, they don’t get sick,” Warner noted. “They carry it for life without showing any signs of illness, which starkly contrasts the human response.”
Health Canada reports that symptoms of hantavirus infection can escalate to shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. While the chances of contracting the virus are relatively low, the stakes are high; approximately 40% of reported Canadian cases result in death. Each year, Canada sees between five to ten confirmed hantavirus cases, predominantly in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Investigating Immune Responses
The ongoing research at VIDO seeks to unravel the differences in immune responses between deer mice and humans. Warner emphasises that identifying specific biomarkers could pave the way for effective treatments. “We’re in the very early stages of that project,” he stated, indicating the preliminary nature of their findings.
As of now, the landscape for hantavirus vaccines remains bleak in North America, with no approved options available. Warner mentioned that while some vaccines have undergone initial clinical trials, progress has been slow. “My lab is exploring one or two approaches, and we’re currently in early clinical trials or pre-clinical studies,” he added, expressing cautious optimism about future developments.
Current Vaccination Landscape
Notably, there are vaccines in use in China and South Korea; however, these target strains of hantavirus that are not present in the Americas. The lack of effective vaccines in North America underscores the urgency of ongoing research.
In the meantime, Warner advises the public to take precautions to minimise the risk of hantavirus exposure. The virus is shed through rodent urine, droppings, and saliva, making areas inhabited by rodents potential hotspots for infection. “When cleaning spaces where rodents have been, the virus can become airborne,” he cautioned. Proper ventilation, the use of disinfectants, and protective gear are essential when tackling rodent infestations.
