Rising Water Levels in Lake Diefenbaker Prompt Caution and Adaptation in Saskatoon

Residents of Saskatoon are bracing for a significant rise in water levels as the Water Security Agency prepares to release water from Lake Diefenbaker into the South Saskatchewan River. This increase, estimated at 0.6 metres, will require local groups, including the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club, to adapt their activities in response to the fast-moving waters.

Flood Precautions and Training Adjustments

The influx of water, a result of record snowpack levels in Alberta—some areas boasting over three metres—has raised concerns among local sports organisations. Rob Sleeth, coach of the Saskatoon Racing Canoe Club, noted the immediate impact on training schedules. “We have schools that come down and do dragon boating, so we’ve had to cancel those. And then for our athletes who train twice a day, it will be a challenge. We’ll have to go elsewhere, maybe to some pond in Stonebridge or maybe out at Pike Lake to continue training,” he explained.

The rapid melting of snow, coupled with over 100 millimetres of rain falling in just a few days, has led to these heightened water levels. John Pomeroy, a professor at the University of Saskatchewan and director of Global Water Futures Observatories, indicated that the current situation mirrors levels seen during significant flood events in 2011 and 2013. “We’re getting to levels that were seen in those years, which stand out very much,” he remarked.

Safety Warnings Amidst Natural Changes

While flooding is not anticipated, the swift currents present a host of dangers. Pomeroy cautioned, “The river’s going to be flowing much more quickly than recent experience has lent us, and so it’s dangerous. The banks can erode, the river water is cold, and it’s very, very fast.” He strongly advised against swimming in the river and urged canoeists and kayakers to exercise extreme caution, particularly near the weir.

In alignment with these warnings, the Saskatoon Fire Department has also advised residents and pets to stay out of the water. As the community grapples with the challenges posed by rising levels, it is important to remain vigilant.

Environmental Benefits of Increased Water Flow

Despite the concerns, there are some ecological advantages to the current situation. Pomeroy highlighted that the increased flow can help restore the river to a more natural state, moving sand and silt downstream. “This brings the river closer back to its natural system. It should flush and move some of the sand to the system that we see in Saskatoon,” he noted.

Mike Steckhan, senior captain of Prairie River Cruises, expressed optimism regarding the ecological impact. “It keeps the river entirely navigable and safe for everybody. So, I’m looking forward to the river turning itself back into what it used to be,” he stated, hinting at the potential for rejuvenation of local waterways.
