A relentless heatwave is set to envelop approximately 70 million people across the United States as the country braces for the third significant “heat dome” in just one month. This alarming weather phenomenon will result in dangerously high temperatures, with readings soaring between 95°F and 105°F (35°C to 40°C) from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Plains and Midwest, and even hotter in some areas, notably the southwestern deserts, where temperatures may reach an astonishing 120°F (48°C).

Heat Dome: A Brewing Crisis

As the weekend approaches, the heat dome is intensifying, trapping swathes of the southern and central states under oppressive heat. This atmospheric pressure system acts like a lid, holding in heat and preventing cooler air from circulating. The impact is not merely uncomfortable; it poses significant health risks, especially for vulnerable populations, including the elderly, pregnant individuals, young children, and those with underlying health issues.

Following that, temperatures soared to 115°F (46°C) in Montana, shattering previous records. The latest heatwave threatens to set new benchmarks in areas like Denver, where residents are bracing for extreme heat warnings, particularly in western Nebraska, where temperatures could hit 108°F (42°C).

Heat is the most lethal weather-related phenomenon in the United States. The combination of high daytime temperatures, elevated overnight lows, and increased humidity during this latest wave of heat leaves little room for relief. As these conditions persist, the threat to public health intensifies.

A Global Heatwave

While the US grapples with its heat crisis, Europe is similarly affected, with around 250,000 individuals forced to evacuate due to raging wildfires in Spain and France. The heatwave that swept through France in June is estimated to have resulted in approximately 5,700 fatalities. The UK is also facing its own challenges, as prolonged dry spells have heightened the risk of wildfires across the landscape.

In total, firefighters in the US are currently battling 88 active wildfires, underscoring the urgent need for effective climate action.

The Climate Reality

Andy Pershing, chief program officer at Climate Central, stresses that the current heat events align with climate models from the 1990s, predicting more frequent and severe heatwaves. “We are experiencing exactly what the climate models in the 1990s said we should experience now,” he stated, highlighting the escalating temperature anomalies, increased humidity, and higher overnight temperatures that are now the new norm.
