As the demand for artificial intelligence data centres intensifies, consumers are feeling the pinch of escalating prices for essential computer components. The cost of memory, particularly RAM and solid-state drives, has surged drastically, leading many to reconsider their tech purchases and upgrades.
The Price Surge: A New Reality for Gamers and Builders
When Stephen Jeffers decided to source components for a new gaming computer late last year, he was taken aback by the steep rise in digital storage prices. “I had most of the parts except for RAM because I was like, ‘I could get that anywhere,’” the St. John’s resident and project manager remarked. Historically, RAM has been abundant and affordable, but recent trends have shattered that expectation.
After witnessing a rapid price increase, Jeffers turned to the secondary market, paying $200 for two 16-gigabyte memory sticks and securing a two-terabyte solid-state drive for $150 during a holiday sale. Fast forward six months, and he’s now looking at a staggering $600 for similar components. “My computer storage has become one of my best-performing assets,” he quipped.
The ‘AI Tax’: What It Means for Consumers
The rising costs are primarily attributed to the soaring demand from AI data centres, which require advanced memory types far exceeding the needs of conventional desktops or gaming consoles. Kevin Jia, CEO of Quoted Tech, a custom computer manufacturer, coined the term “AI tax” to describe the burden consumers now face when purchasing new devices or building their own. “We want computing to be as affordable as possible. Unfortunately, we have to cover the costs of our supply. We can’t eat $400 to $500 of memory. No company can,” Jia explained.
Industry giants like Micron Technology, SK Hynix, and Samsung Electronics are shifting their focus towards enterprise clients, leaving little room for consumer-grade memory production. In December, Micron announced the closure of its consumer brand after reporting record revenues, further constricting the market for everyday consumers.
Widespread Impact: From Smartphones to Custom Builds
Apple is one of the many tech firms adjusting its prices in response to these changes, increasing costs for various products: a budget Neo laptop now starts at $699, up from $599, while the MacBook Air has risen to $1,299 from $1,099. The company acknowledged the unprecedented nature of these price hikes, attributing it to the “extraordinary” demand from AI data centres. Other companies, including Dell, Microsoft, and Sony, have similarly raised their prices, compounding the challenges faced by consumers.
For tech enthusiasts like Toronto-based gamer Vamsi Kolluru, the landscape is shifting dramatically. Historically, building a computer was a cost-effective alternative to purchasing pre-built systems. However, with RAM prices surging from $150 for 32 gigabytes in 2022 to around $370 today, the economics of building custom rigs no longer add up. “I’ve had pre-built computers before and they’re always lacking; they don’t have the best specs and it’s cheaper to build it yourself,” Kolluru noted, expressing frustration over the current market dynamics.
The Way Forward: Challenges Ahead
As chip manufacturers look to increase their production capacity, industry experts warn that new facilities typically take around two years to become operational. Meanwhile, consumers like Jeffers are concerned about the long-term implications of these price hikes. “We’re losing control of the very things we’re spending money on,” he lamented, highlighting a growing trend of consumers becoming increasingly reliant on cloud storage and rental services rather than owning physical devices.
