In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about the treatment of immigrants in US detention facilities, a Cuban immigrant named Geraldo Luna Campos tragically died earlier this month while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a detention center in El Paso, Texas.

According to a preliminary report from the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office, Luna Campos’ death has been classified as a homicide, resulting from asphyxia due to chest and neck compression. This contradicts the initial claims made by the US government, which stated that the 55-year-old father of four had attempted suicide, and that staff had intervened in an attempt to save his life.

However, an eyewitness account provided by a fellow detainee, Santos Jesús Flores, paints a very different picture. Flores claims that he witnessed the incident unfold from his cell, and that Luna Campos was already in handcuffs when at least five guards restrained him on the floor, with at least one of them wrapping their arm around his neck. Flores states that within roughly five minutes, Luna Campos had stopped moving.

“He didn’t want to enter the cell where they were going to put him,” Flores told the Associated Press. “Then the guards grabbed him and, well, they grabbed him and they killed him. The last thing he said was that he couldn’t breathe.”

The conflicting accounts have further heightened the scrutiny surrounding the conditions of immigration detention centers, particularly at a time when the US government has been increasing the number of immigrants being rounded up and detained across the country.

ICE, the agency responsible for Luna Campos’ detention, has been legally obligated to issue public notifications of detainee deaths, but in this case, the agency’s initial statement made no mention of the altercation with staff that immediately preceded his death.

In a revised statement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, acknowledged that Luna Campos had “violently resisted the security staff and continued to attempt to take his life.” However, the department did not respond to questions about whether Luna Campos was handcuffed when he allegedly attempted suicide, or precisely how he had tried to take his own life.

The case has also raised concerns about the potential lack of transparency and accountability in the investigation process. Flores, the eyewitness, claims that investigators have not yet spoken to him, and that security cameras should have recorded the incident.

The tragic death of Geraldo Luna Campos has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding the treatment of immigrants in US detention facilities, with many calling for a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding this disturbing incident.
