A concerning public health alert has been issued as the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, has been identified in recreational waters across several national parks in the United States. The alarming findings, which stem from a recent study, show that this rare but deadly organism was present in roughly one-third of the 185 water samples collected from popular outdoor destinations, including Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. As visitors flock to these sites, health experts are urging caution and awareness of the potential risks associated with swimming in natural bodies of water.
Widespread Detection Across Popular Parks
The U.S. Geological Survey, along with its partner agencies, conducted thorough testing in multiple national parks, including Olympic National Park, Newberry National Volcanic Monument, and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The results revealed that Lake Mead, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone exhibited the highest levels of contamination. This year alone, millions of people have already visited these parks, raising concerns about public safety as the summer season progresses.
Dr. Lyssette Cardona, an infectious disease specialist from Cleveland Clinic Florida, highlighted the significance of understanding how Naegleria fowleri thrives. “This microscopic amoeba is a free-living organism found in warm freshwater environments, such as lakes and rivers, as well as in inadequately maintained swimming pools,” she explained.
How to Stay Safe
To protect themselves and their families from infection, experts recommend that visitors exercise caution when engaging in water activities. Key preventive measures include refraining from submerging the head in hot springs and pinching the nose before diving into freshwater.
Infections occur when contaminated water enters the nose, potentially leading to a severe condition known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). Symptoms can manifest quickly and may include fever, headaches, nausea, and confusion. If the infection progresses, individuals may experience hallucinations, seizures, and potentially fatal brain swelling. Alarmingly, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that nearly all cases of PAM—97%—result in death within just a few weeks of symptom onset, with some cases progressing to coma and death in as little as five days.
Climate Change and the Spread of Infections
While cases of PAM are rare, the impact of climate change on the spread of Naegleria fowleri cannot be ignored. Experts note that warmer air temperatures have contributed to rising water temperatures in lakes and rivers, creating favourable conditions for the amoeba to thrive. A CDC study from 2021 indicated that the organism is moving northward from the southern United States into the Midwest and even reaching as far as Minnesota.
“There is a clear correlation between elevated water temperatures and the prevalence of Naegleria fowleri,” the CDC stated. “As the climate continues to change, the potential for infections may increase.”
Fortunately, individuals cannot contract PAM through drinking contaminated water or from contact with infected persons. There is also no evidence suggesting that the amoeba spreads through water vapour or aerosol droplets. Properly maintained and disinfected swimming pools remain safe for recreational use.
